Children love a mission. Give them a clipboard, a title like "Tap Detective" and a chart to fill in, and they will happily check every tap in the house. That is the spirit of Mission LiFE.
What is Mission LiFE?
Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) is a movement launched by India in October 2022 to encourage everyday, individual actions that protect the environment. The idea is simple: when millions of people make small changes in how they use water, energy and things, the total impact is large. Children are perfect ambassadors, because they bring these habits to the whole family.
Save water (5 activities)
- Tap Detective. Check every tap at home for drips once a week. A tap leaking one drop a second can waste over 10,000 litres in a year.
- Bucket bath challenge. Use a bucket and mug instead of a shower for a week, and mark each day on a chart.
- Brush with the tap off. Turn it off while brushing and see how many mugs of water the family saves.
- Reuse RO water. If your home has a water purifier, collect the reject water in a bucket and use it for mopping or washing.
- Thirsty plants. Water plants in the early morning or evening, when less water evaporates.
Save energy (4 activities)
- Switch-off patrol. Before leaving any room, check lights and fans. Give your child the job of "Energy Marshal".
- Unplug the vampires. Chargers and set-top boxes draw power even when idle. Unplug them at night.
- Study by daylight. Move the homework desk near a window and switch off the light while the sun is out.
- Meter reading race. Read the electricity meter every evening for a week. Can the family use less on day 7 than day 1?
Reduce waste (4 activities)
- Two-bin kitchen. Set up a wet bin and a dry bin and make your child the waste captain. Our wet and dry waste guide explains what goes where.
- Cloth bag hero. Keep a cloth bag by the door and refuse plastic bags at the shop.
- Peel to soil. Start a small compost pot with vegetable peels and dry leaves.
- Repair before replace. Before buying something new, ask: can it be fixed, shared or reused?
Care for nature (2 activities)
- Plant a pot. Grow tulsi, mint or a small sapling and record its height every week.
- Bird water bowl. In summer, keep a shallow bowl of water on the balcony and note which birds visit.
How to make it stick: turn it into a game
- Use a streak chart. A tick for each day builds momentum. Children hate breaking a streak.
- Give titles, not chores. "Tap Detective" is a role; "check the taps" is a chore.
- Measure and celebrate. Count the buckets saved or bags refused, and celebrate the total at the end of the week.
- Let them teach. Children remember best when they explain the idea to a sibling or grandparent.
This is exactly how the ICLC championship works: short daily actions, a Climate Passport with stamps, and recognition for every step. Want a warm-up? Try the Climate Brain Blast game together.
- Mission LiFE is about small, everyday choices that add up.
- Water, energy, waste and nature give children 15 easy missions.
- Titles, streaks and celebration turn chores into habits.
